Amavasya nights are dark without moonlight. Moon is weak and therefore during these days your mind (Mann) is weak too. It is said that all negative sources of energies, bad thoughts, etc. are active and you may find difficult to resist them. Therefore Amavasya brings opportunities for humans to pray to GOD, offer pujas and do donations. People avoid going out on journeys due to the danger of darkness and evil spirits active in the surroundings.

One of the most important Hindu festivals Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya. People lit up Lanterns, Diyas, Lights in their homes to dispel darkness, evil spirits that are present during this time. They worship all the deities in particular - Ganesha, Laxmi, and Saraswati. These Gods and Goddesses convey the message that it should be considered an auspicious day, also it is followed by the beginning of Shukla Paksha i.e. 'Ujjala' or bright half of the month where moon size is in ascending order.

Due to darkness at night, it is easier to invoke the evil occult powers so bad people do tantra Puja on such days. Good folks pray to Lord Vishnu and as many ancient texts say that one’s ancestors come down to earth on the day of Amavasya. So they offer them food and prayers and show gratitude towards your forefathers and get their blessings. Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day can fulfill all home with happiness.
